=== Crop Yields and Agricultural Shocks === While warmer temperatures might initially extend the growing season in high-latitude regions, the overall global impact on staple crops (such as wheat, maize, and rice) is decidedly negative. Crops are highly sensitive to temperature spikes during critical developmental phases, such as pollination and grain-filling. Short-term extreme heat events can sterilize pollen, leading to catastrophic crop failures even if the average seasonal temperature was only slightly elevated. Furthermore, shifting precipitation regimes—resulting in prolonged droughts punctuated by intense, flooding rains—strip topsoil and severely disrupt planting and harvesting cycles.
